What Supported Independent Living is

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is NDIS funding for support workers to help or supervise someone, up to 24 hours a day. It's often in a shared home, where workers may be shared with housemates. It pays for the support, not rent or the house.

  • Specialist disability accommodation (SDA) is the only NDIS funding for the housing itself. The support is funded separately, for example through SIL.
  • Since 1 October 2026, SIL can only be delivered by registered NDIS providers, or providers that applied to register before that date. We're registered with the NDIS Commission for SIL. See our registration groups.
  • Community nursing care is also one of our registration groups. Ask us what's available.

Asking the NDIS about home and living

  1. Make a list togetherThe person's support needs and goals, like where they'd like to live and who with.
  2. Talk to their my NDIS contactThe contact person named in the NDIS plan can explain the options.
  3. Get evidence from a treating professionalOften an occupational therapist, explaining daily support needs and the options you've looked at.
  4. Send it in and wait for the decisionIf supports are added, you'll be invited to a plan meeting. If not, they'll explain why, and you can ask for a review.

Planning ahead as a parent

If you've cared for your son or daughter for years, planning ahead isn't giving up. It's how the life they enjoy keeps going, even on the days you can't be there. Start while you can still choose together.

Coming home from hospital

A hospital stay can change the support someone needs. Talk to the discharge planner before leaving, and tell the NDIS early if the person is a participant. A plan variation can help with short-term or urgent changes.
